The Florida
 Schoolyear 2000
 Initiative

DESCRIPTION, HISTORY, AND MISSION OF SY2000

The SY2000 Initiative was a comprehensive effort to increase the productivity of public school students in Florida through developing, testing, and implementing a technology-supported system of schooling. In 1989, the Florida Department of Education (DOE) asked the Center for Performance Technology (CPT) to direct this multi-year initiative.  Collaborating partners in the design and development of SY2000 included DOE, CPT, Public Schools Council, 9 Operational Test Sites, Leadership Council, Policy Advisory Council, DOE Planning and Resource Committee, and the Systems Integration Team (SIT).

The SY2000 mission was to increase the productivity of public school students in Florida through developing, testing, and implementing a technology-supported system of schooling.  The ultimate vision was for each student to acquire the foundational skills and competencies needed to succeed in adult life in an information age. SY2000 design principles were derived from research in a variety of fields such as teaching, learning, motivation, psychology, instructional design, engineering, business, management, financial management, communications, and electronics.  A quality system meeting international quality standards guided the total schooling process.
