Solutions in Instructional Methods and Materials

Instructions

  • Show same information in video or movie.
  • Provide materials in braille.
  • Let student record lectures or discussions, digitally or on tape.
  • Use real-life, concrete materials when introducing abstract ideas.
  • Let student use concrete materials and manipulatives when introducing abstract ideas.
  • Use hands-on avtivities, pictures, or diagrams to represent abstract concepts or complex information.
  • Give instructions with steps outlined in writing or in picture sequences.
  • Use charts and graphics to reinforce oral presentation.

Technology

  • Use summary feature of word processing software to cognitively rescale text.
  • Let student use digitized text software that resizes, changes background or text color, highlights specified segments of text, reads aloud.
  • Let student use reading pen.
  • Provide tools and equuipment with voice capability, such as talking calculator, screen reader.
  • Let student use assistive technology for sound amplification.
  • Provide audio books or large print versions of texts.

  • Combine oral directions with pictures, written words, and diagrams.
  • Give instructions with steps outlined in writing or picture sequences.
  • Let student read items aloud while working on assignment or test.

  • Use clear formatting for handouts, assignments, and tests.

Technology

  • Adjust computer monitor for maximum contrast between background and text.
  • Let student use assitive technology for amplification of sound.
  • Provide tools and equipment with voice capability: talking calculator, screen reader.
  • Use computer-based models for math concepts.

Classroom Tests

  • Reduce number of items per page.
  • Block matching questions into small groups of 4 or 5 items.
  • Provide copies of test on audiotape, in braille, or in large print format.
  • Provide copy of information on board so student doesn't have to copy it.

FCAT

  • Highlight key words or phrases in test directions, questions, and passages.
  • Give student printed copy of directions read by teacher from FCAT administration script.
  • Present signed version of directions.
  • Use tabbed or modified pages for easier turning.
  • Enhance visual attention with pointer, template, covering portion of test, colored transparencies or overlays.
  • Enlarge print through electronic or mechanical means.
  • Use large print version of test.
  • Give braille version of test.
  • Use fewer items per page; increase space between test items.
  • Have test administrator read all math and science questions without rewording, summarizing, or simplifying.

  • Use positioning tools such as book stand or tilt-top desk.

Solutions in Special Communications Systems

FCAT

  • Use text-to-speech technology to communicate directions and test items other than reading passages or items.
  • Use signed or oral presentation of topic (prompt) on writing test, and all math and science items.
