Accommodations in Instructional Methods and Materials

  • Give student list of important vocabulary.
  • Prepare summary with blanks or questions for students to complete.

Accommodations in Assignments and Assessments

Organizing

  • Give student structured outline or graphic organizer to plan assignments.
  • Let student use webs, diagrams, charts, and outlines to plan or respond to open-ended or essay questions.

Support

  • Give student two copies of worksheet: draft and final copy.
  • Provide specific questions to prompt the student's written response.
  • Let student use thesaurus to find words.

Group Work

  • Let student use peer editing or teacher help in revision process.

Technology

  • Let student use spell-check or grammar-check utility in word processing software.
  • Let student use a word processing software with word prediction assistance.
  • Let student use software that places symbols above words in written assignments.

Classroom Tests

  • Grade content and mechanics separately in assignments or tests that require written expression; let student correct spelling or grammar errors.
  • Let student use alternate demonstrations of knowledge and skills using oral explanations, role playing, or interviewing.

Accommodations in Learning Environment

  • Let student use a study carrel to take test or for independent work.
  • Let student take test in another classroom with no distractions.
  • Let student sit away from busy area of classroom.
  • Identify quiet area where student can go when necessary.

Accommodations in Time Demands or Scheduling

  • Reduce length of written assignment, or allow more time.

FCAT

  • Let student dictate responses to writing and extended response questions.
  • Let student word processor without spell-check utility.
