Accommodations in Instructional Methods and Materials

Instructions

  • Present material in logical manner; use cues to shift from one aspect to next.
  • Break complex information into steps or identify key components.
  • Provide oral and visual prompts during lecture or discussion about what to include in notes.
  • Provide additional examples and non-examples.
  • Use modeling and thinking aloud when teaching.
  • Use a template to focus attention on one line of text or one column of math problem.

Highlighting

  • Highlight important points in text for student.
  • Color-code or highlight key words in math word problems.
  • Let student use sticky notes, erasable highlighter, or highlighter tape to mark key points in text.

Support

  • Have student read review questions first, then find answers.
  • Use real-life, concrete materials and manipulatives when introducing abstract ideas.
  • Let student use calculator for routine computations.
  • Let student use chart or table with basic math facts.
  • Let student use flow chart to plan strategies for math problem solving.

Monitoring

  • Monitor student comprehension as information is presented.
  • Ask student to tell or write important points in own words before end of class.
  • Arrange meeting with student after class to clarify lesson.

Accommodations in Assignments and Assessments

Support

  • Check to see if student needs help getting started.
  • Use concrete materials and manipulatives to explore and learn about math concepts.
  • Provide practice on single concepts and skills before mixed practice.
  • Give extra examples for practice.
  • Let student use flow chart to plan strategies for math problem solving.
  • Provide paper with math guides or graph paper for computation.
  • Let student use abacus for math calculations.

Technology

  • Use computer-based models to represent math concepts.
  • Let student use calculator to recheck or complete calculations.
  • Let student use self-checking materials or computer-assisted instruction to practice skills.
  • Provide tools and equipment with voice capability: talking calculator.

Classroom Tests
