Accommodations in Instructional Methods and Materials

Instructions

  • Provide written overview of learning outcomes and content at beginning of lesson.
  • Break complex information into steps or identify key components.
  • Repeat, paraphrase, and summarize key information, especially at end of lesson.
  • Have student paraphrase instructions to demonstrate understanding.
  • Use mnemonic devices to enhance retention, for example, “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” (Multiply, Divide, Add, Subtract) for order of operations in equations.
  • Complete sample problems to show what is expected.

Notetaking

  • Provide oral and visual prompts during lecture or discussion about what to include in notes.
  • Teach 2-column notetaking or concept mapping techniques.
  • Key class notes to relevant text pages.
  • Let student record class lectures or discussions, digitally or on tape.

Highlighting

  • Highlight important points in text for student.
  • Let student use sticky notes, erasable highlighter, or highlighter tape to mark key points in test.
  • Color-code or highlight key words in math word problems.

Group Work

  • Promote active student involvement with questions, small group interaction, discussion, structured responses.
  • Use cooperative learning techniques like Think-Pair-Share or Jigsaw for student review.

Support

  • Give student an agenda or schedule for the day.
  • Prepare summary with blanks or questions for students to complete.
  • Have student read review questions first, then find answers.
  • Let student use chart or table of basic math facts.

Monitoring

  • Monitor student comprehension as information is presented.
  • Ask student to tell or write important points in own words before end of class.
  • Arrange meeting with student after class to clarify lesson.

Accommodations in Assignments and Assessments

Support

  • Teach student to use paper or electronic calendar or personal planner to track assignments and work.
  • Let student use thesaurus to find words.
  • Let student use word processing software with word prediction assistance.
  • Let student use spelling dictionary or electronic spelling aid.
  • Give student structured outline or graphic organizer to plan assignments.
  • Conduct review of knowledge and skills several days before test.
  • Provide study guide to help students prepare.

Classroom Tests

  • Provide practice with test format, sample, questions, and scoring rubric.
  • Read test instructions to student and simplify language.
  • Provide word banks for fill-in-the-blank questions.
  • Let student take open book test, unless test requires memorization.
  • Let student retake test and give credit for improvement.

FCAT

  • Repeat, clarify, and summarize test directions.
  • Give student copy of directions as read by teacher from FCAT administration script.
  • Highlight key words or phrases in directions, questions, and passages.
  • Use extra examples for practice.

Accommodations in Learning Environment

  • Let student use self-checking materials or computer-assisted instruction to practice skills.
