Accommodations in Instructional Methods and Materials

Group Work

  • Make sure student has communication and social skills for group work.
  • Assign trained classmate to work with student when teacher is unavailable.
  • Use cooperative learning activities to support participation.

Support

  • Provide balance of types of activities in lessons.
  • Provide follow-up instruction individually.

Accommodations in Asignments and Assessments

Instructions

  • Make sure student faces teacher for directions.
  • Alert student with signal before giving directions, change tone of voice to sustain attention.
  • When modeling expected behavior, describe key components.
  • Use consistent routines to start lessons, change classes, complete activity, go to lunch, move around school.
  • Give student a copy of expected behaviors or assessment rubric.
  • Give student class rules and expectations.
  • Give positive reinforcement for using appropriate behaviors or following class rules.
  • Establish and use consequences for misbehaving.
  • Provide overview of learning outcomes and content at beginning of lesson.
  • Provide study guide for student to follow during independent reading.

Organizing

  • Use regular routines and procedures for transitions in class.
  • Place timeline or assignment list on student’s desk.
  • Help student keep journal or homework log that includes instructions and timelines.

Group Work

  • Promote active student involvement with questions, small group interaction, discussion, structured responses.
  • Assign student specific role and responsibility in group activities.
  • Let student work with trained classmate to stay on task in group work.
  • Allow partial participation in cooperative groups.
  • Use cooperative learning activities to support participation.

Monitoring

  • Give student an individual responsibility checklist.
  • Monitor student’s conduct; communicate regularly with student, family, others.
  • Use reward system to motivate timely assignment completion.

Classroom Tests

  • Let student use study carrel to take test.
  • Let student take breaks during test period.

Accommodations in Learning Environment

Support

  • Have student sit close to teacher.
  • Seat student to maximize attention and reduce distraction from windows, vents, doors, resource areas, other students.
  • Identify quiet area where student can go when necessary.
  • Let student use learning center with appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Use consistent routines to start lessons, change classes, complete activity, go to lunch, move around school.
  • Give student legitimate chances to move around classroom, use restroom, get drink of water.
  • Let student sit near aide, volunteer, or trained classmate who can help maintain attention and understanding.
  • Give positive reinforcement for using appropriate behaviors or following class rules.
  • Establish and use consequences for misbehaving.

FCAT

  • Increase or decrease the opportunity for movement as needed.
  • Use white noise (sound machines) to reduce auditory distractions.
  • Administer test in specialized setting approved as unique accommodation.

Accommodations in Time Demands and Scheduling

Organizing

  • Give studen an agenda or schedule for the day.
  • Use timer to define work times.
  • Teach student to use paper or electronic calendar or personal planner to track assignments and work.
  • Provide alternative activities for unstructured time.

FCAT

  • Administer test in several brief sessions allowing frequent breaks, within specifications of test administration manual.
  • Administer a portion or all of test at a specific time of day.
