Accommodations in Instructional Methods and Materials

Instructions

  • Provide overview of learning outcomes and content at beginning of lesson.
  • Use modeling and thinking aloud when teaching.
  • Link what is being learned to previous lessons or background knowledge.
  • Present material in logical manner; use cues to shift from one aspect to the next.
  • Break complex information into steps or identify key components.
  • Repeat, paraphrase, and summarize key information, especially at end of lecture or discussion.

Notetaking

  • Provide oral and visual prompts during lecture or discussion about what to include in notes.
  • Key class notes to relevant text pages.
  • Provide copies of transparencies, lecture outline, or graphic organizer to assist with notetaking.
  • Give student a copy of peer's notes.
  • Let student use mindmapping software to outline material presented.

Group Work

  • Promote active student involvement: questions, small group interaction, discussion, structured responses.
  • Use cooperative learning techniques like Think, Pair, Share or Jigsaw for student review.

Monitoring

  • Prepare summary with blanks or questions for students to complete.
  • Monitor student comprehension as information is presented.
  • Ask student to tell or write important points in own words before end of class.
  • Make student feel comfortable asking for help by saying, “Tell me what you need,” “How does this fit with what you know?”

Accommodations in Assignments and Assessments

Instructions

  • Alert student with signal before giving directions.
  • Change tone of voice to capture and sustain attention.
  • Combine oral directions with pictures, printed words, and diagrams.
  • Provide overview of learning objectives and content at beginning of lesson.
  • Present material in logical manner; use cues to shift from one aspect to another.
  • Have student read summary or lesson objectives first.
  • Give student list of important vocabulary.
  • Break complex information into steps or identify key components.
  • Use charts and graphics to reinforce oral presentation.
  • Use hands-on activities, pictures, or diagrams to represent abstract concepts or complex information.
  • Show same information in video or movie.

Classroom Tests

  • Conduct review of knowledge and skills several days before test.
  • Provide study guide to help students prepare for test.
  • Read test instructions to student and simplify language.

FCAT

  • Repeat, clarify, and summarize directions.
  • Highlight key words or phrases in directions, questions, and passages.
  • Provide student a copy of directions reads from FCAT administration script.
  • Ask student to demonstrate understanding of directions by repeating or paraphrasing.
