Accommodations in Instructional Methods and Materials

Instructions

  • Provide study guide for student to follow during independent reading.
  • Make sure student faces teacher for directions.
  • Use nonverbal communication to convey information.
  • Use hands-on activities, pictures, or diagrams to represent abstract concepts or complex information.
  • Use charts and graphics to reinforce oral presentation.
  • Use notetaker and/or sign language interpreter.

Highlighting

  • Highlight important points in text for student.

Technology

  • Show some information in video or movie with captioning.
  • Use speech-to-text software.

Group Work

  • Use cooperative learning activities to support participation.

Accommodations in Assignments and Assessments

Instructions

  • Provide sign language interpreter.
  • Make sure student faces teacher for directions.
  • Alert student with signal when giving directions.
  • Combine oral directions with pictures, printed words, and diagrams.
  • Let student use concrete materials and manipulatives when learning math concepts.

Technology

  • Let student use assistive technology for amplification of sound.

Group Work

  • Assign buddy to help student.
  • Use cooperative learning activities to support participation.
  • Let student use peer editing or teacher help in revision process.

Monitoring

  • Check to see if student needs help getting started.
  • Communicate homework expectations to parents so they can help.

FCAT

  • Have sign language interpreter present directions.
  • Give student a printed copy of directions that teacher reads from FCAT admnistration script.
  • Have student paraphrase or repeat directions to show understanding.
  • Repeat, clarify, and summarize directions.
  • Use signed or oral presentation of topic (prompt) in writing test and all math and science items.
  • Let student sign responses to interpreter.

Accommodations in Learning Environment

  • Make sure student faces teacher for directions.
  • Provide adaptive or special furniture, lightling, and acoustics as needed.
  • Let student use auditory amplification devices.

FCAT

  • Use auditory amplification devices.
  • Administer test in classroom with special lighting and/or acoustics.

Accommodations in Special Communications Systems

  • Use total communication, which includes sign language, finger spelling, and lip reading.
  • Use augmentative communication systems, such as communications board or presented symbol system.
