Use of Special Communication Systems

Students who need special communication systems:

• Have a hearing impairment
• Need augmentative communication devices
• Are English Language Learners
• Are nonverbal or language impaired

Examples of special communication systems:

• Use total communication, which involves combining sign language and speech or lip reading so that a word is signed and spoken at the same time.
• Use sound amplification with lighting or images to give a range of auditory and visual stimulation.
• Use American Sign Language (ASL), finger spelling, lip reading.
• Use a communication board.
• Provide instruction in English as a second language (ESL).
• Use appropriate assistive technology.
