Lower Grade Level of Mastery

Summary:

This page presents information about the type of student who may require modifications in expected level of mastery and gives examples of this type of modification.

Students who require modifications in the expected level of mastery are those who the IEP team decides are working substantially below grade level and the team feels will not be able to master all of the needed skills.

Examples of modifications in the area of expected level of mastery include:

  • While the student’s classmates are learning two-digit addition with regrouping, the student is learning to add number facts to five.
  • The student is learning to write a simple sentence while his or her peers are learning how to write an essay.
  • During a lesson where most students are learning to describe the responsibilities of the president, the student is learning to tell the current president’s name and identify his picture.
  • During a lesson on budgeting, the student works on matching coins to a sample card to see if he or she has enough money to purchase an item.
