Alternate Curriculum

Summary:

This page presents information about the type of student who may require an alternate curriculum and gives examples of this type of modification.

Students who require modifications in curriculum content are those who the IEP team decides have a significant cognitive disability that prevents the student from achieving the Sunshine State Standards, even with allowable accommodations. A student needs instruction in functional academics and vocational competencies as well as domestic, community, living, and leisure activities. These students are working on the Access Points for the Sunshine State Standards.

Examples of modifications include:

  • While the students' classmates are learning two-digit addition with regrouping, the student is learning to add number facts to five.
  • The student is learning to write a simple sentence while his or her peers are learning how to write an essay.
  • During a lesson where most students are learning to describe the responsibilities of the president, the student is learning to tell the current president's name and identity his picture
  • During a lesson on budgeting, the student workds on matching coins to sample card to see if he or she has enough money to purchase an item.
