The American College Test (ACT) is designed to assess high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college level work. The tests cover four skills areas: English, reading, mathematics, and science.

The ACT English Test measures understanding of conventions of standard written English (punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentence structure) and of rhetorical skills (strategy, organization, and style). The ACT Reading Test measures reading comprehension based on four types of reading selections: the social studies, the natural sciences, prose fiction, and the humanities. The ACT Mathematics Test assesses the mathematical skills students have typically acquired in courses taken up to the beginning of grade 12. The ACT Science Test measures the interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required in the natural sciences.
